Writers Guild of America West Prepares for Contract Negotiations

The Writers Guild of America West, which represents Hollywood writers, is set to begin contract negotiations with major studios next week. This comes nearly three years after a historic 148-day strike that virtually shut down the film and TV industry.

Despite the challenges faced by many of its members due to media consolidation and belt-tightening, the union is not backing down from its demands. WGA West President Michele Mulroney has made it clear that the members are willing to fight for what they need as a collective group.

Key Priorities for the Writers Guild

The WGA’s current contract expires on May 1, and the union is seeking to improve its members’ healthcare plans, increase streaming residuals, and expand AI protections. The union’s executive director, Ellen Stutzman, argues that the studios have weathered the transition to streaming well, citing their efforts to maximize revenue through streaming bundling, rising subscription fees, and advertising revenue.

A top priority for the WGA is to increase the caps that companies contribute to the union’s healthcare plan, which have remained unchanged for two decades as healthcare contributions have steadily declined due to fewer writers working. The union is also concerned about the impact of AI on writers’ work, as major studios start to make deals with AI companies to monetize the intellectual property created by writers.

Negotiations and Potential Challenges

The WGA’s negotiating committee, led by co-chair John August, is also looking to boost streaming residuals, expand the minimum number of people allowed in a writers’ room, and add protections for scribes working on pilots. The union is hopeful that the lessons learned from the 2023 strike will lead to a more constructive and collaborative bargaining process with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents the major studios.

However, the WGA’s staff union is currently on strike, which could add an additional layer of complexity to the negotiations. The union has threatened to cancel its award ceremony if the staff strike is not resolved before the event.

Outlook for the Negotiations

Despite the challenges, the WGA is determined to secure a fair deal for its members. Mulroney has expressed the union’s hope that the AMPTP will come to the table ready to take the WGA’s proposals seriously and make a fair deal quickly, as it would provide stability for both the companies and the union’s membership.

The negotiations come nearly a month after the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, began its own bargaining sessions with the AMPTP. The AMPTP has already extended the SAG-AFTRA negotiations by an additional seven days, indicating the potential for a complex and drawn-out process.
